Chris Eubank Jr delivered like he said he would when he defeated Conor Benn inside a sold-out Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this past weekend.
The Brighton man had been insistent all throughout the lengthy build-up, a process that took nearly three years, that he was the better fighter, and he proved that with a thrilling effort that saw the stock of both men enhanced massively.
Eubank Jr was able to deter Benn’s relentless attacks in the early stages, but when the younger fighter did manage to enjoy some success in the middle rounfs, it set up a pulsating finish.
The fforts of both combatants in the final round brought deafening noise from the crowd as they climbed to their feet to applaud the efforts of Eubank Jr and Benn, and it was the former who got the verdict from the ringside judges.
In the immediate aftermath of the bout, attention briefly switched to several opinions as some were split on the final outcome.
Did people prefer the aggression from Benn? Or were the accurate punches from Eubank Jr the biggest difference when assessing the fight.
Carl Froch, a former world champion who has sparred with Eubank Jr, believes his previous gym partner did enough to get the nod.
“Chris Eubank Jr was the winner. He was the right winner. I thought he won by the same scorecard, 116-112, I had it exactly the same,” said Froch when speaking on Froch on Fighting.
“Don’t get me wrong, it was a close fight, but the right man won and that’s all that matters.”
