Fabio Wardley has been universally applauded for his recent effort against Daniel Dubois, but Barry McGuigan has urged the former world champion to retire.
Wardley lost his belt to Dubois earlier but this month in one of the best fights ever seen inside a British ring as both men left the ring with their reputations massively enhanced.
The Ipswich man made a great start as he dropped Dubois with the first attack of the fight, and he followed that up well in round three as he floored Dubois for a second time with a big right hand.
Despite the awful beginning to the fight, Dubois rallied well to take control in the middle rounds and his frequent assaults began to cause some damage to the eyes and nose of Wardley.
With Dubois on top and Wardley constantly under observation from the referee and the ringside doctors, a huge shot from Dubois in round 11 was enough for Howard Foster to jump in save Wardley for another day as Dubois began to celebrate with his team.
In the fight’s immediate aftermath, Frank Warren revealed that a rematch clause existed for Wardley, but his main priority was a full recovery for both fighters following an unforgettable battle.
McGuigan, a former world champion, has provided Wardley with some advice as he rests before making is next move.
“I genuinely don’t think he should take that rematch. I think it’s too dangerous,” said McGuigan when speaking to Seconds Out.
“I genuinely think he took way too much punishment, and that was so severe, if I was him, I would never fight again.”
