Former world champion, Ricky Hatton, has urged people to slow down regarding the rapid progression of rising heavyweight star, Moses Itauma, as he continues to be linked with a blockbuster clash against undisputed ruler, Oleksandr Usyk.

Itauma, who has dazzled fans and pundits alike with his composed performances and undeniable talent, has seen his stock rise rapidly in recent months, and it reached peak levels in August when he destroyed former world title challenger, Dillian Whyte, in the opening session.

While his latest outing drew widespread praise for its maturity, skill, and power, Hatton believes that patience remains key in plotting Itauma’s future.

In an era where promising prospects are often fast-tracked toward world title contention, Hatton’s voice stands out as a reminder of the pitfalls that can come with moving too quickly.

The former super-lightweight ruler pointed to Itauma’s impressive display but questioned whether the leap to elite level is wise just yet.

With Usyk looming as a potential opponent, the stakes could not be higher for Itauma, but his team, led by Hall of Fame promoter, Frank Warren, may have other ideas as he continues to build experience.

“I think they might have stepped him up a bit too quick. It was a very experienced performance, way beyond his years,” said Hatton when speaking about the Whyte fight with BBC Sport.

“They’re talking about Usyk next, woah, let’s just hold fire there just a little bit.

“Usyk will only have a couple [more fights]. If you look at the heavyweights coming through, it’s wide open for Itauma and I think he can clear up.”
