Oscar De La Hoya has a long history with Canelo Alvarez, good and bad, but he now believes the Mexican icon has a rival who will knock him out.
Canelo was promoted by De La Hoya for a lengthy portion of his career but after the pair split, the relationship became toxic, and they have repeatedly taken verbal swipes at each other whenever their paths have crossed and also when conducting interviews.
Earlier this month, Canelo lost for the third time in his career when he was beaten by Terence Crawford in one of the year’s biggest fights in Las Vegas.
Canelo entered the fight a significant favourite, but he had no answer to combat Crawford’s tactics, and he was beaten on the scorecards as Crawford joined Dmitry Bivol and Floyd Mayweather as fighters who were able to get past Canelo.
The next move for Canelo is still unknown, but he continues to be linked to a showdown with David Benavidez.
The Arizona man is in action in November when he defends his world light-heavyweight title against Anthony Yarde, but Canelo is his ultimate target after years of chasing his rival.
De La Hoya is a big fan of Benavidez, but he believes fight fans will never get to see the fight as Canelo already knows what the outcome will be.
“It would never happen, trust me,” said De La Hoya when speaking to Fighting Hype.
“Canelo knows that David Benavidez will knock him out. He will never do it.”
