Hamzah Sheeraz has a huge fight next month when he tackles Alem Begic for the vacant WBO title at 168lbs, but Canelo Alvarez is also another fighter who is on the mind of Sheeraz.

Last year, Sheeraz endured mixed fortunes inside the ring as he was lucky to escape with a draw against Carlos Adames in February before producing the best performances of his career against Edgar Berlanga after moving up to super-middleweight to stop the heavy-handed Puerto Rican.

Sheeraz, promoted by Frank Warren, has long been seen as one of Britain’s most exciting prospects and now he has the chance to become world champion when he collides with Begic in Egypt.

Victory will open the doors for even bigger fights and that could mean a future showdown with Canelo who is looking to rebuild his career after losing to Terence Crawford last September.

The Mexican icon is set to return to the ring this September with a fight for the WBC belt against Christian Mbilli a strong possibility.

Eith Crawford retiring after the Canelo win, the number one spot in the division is now filled by the four-weight world champion according to The Ring, but Sheeraz has questioned whether that is the right call.

“You could say he is because of what he’s done, but at the same time, you’ve got these young guns coming through like myself,” said Sheeraz when speaking to Inside the Ring Show.

“I think it’s time for him to give us the opportunity to prove ourselves and take over that number one spot. I’ve always had talks about being an opponent for him, but it’s never really happened.”
