Filip Hrgovic is set to defend his IBF heavyweight title against Frank Sanchez in Croatia early next year, with BoxingScene reporting that’s what the plan is regarding the highly anticipated showdown.

The Croatian heavyweight is expected to make the first defence of his world title on home soil, with his promoter, Frank Warren, eager to make plans to bring the contest to fruition in early 2027.

Hrgovic secured the IBF crown in August after producing a remarkable comeback victory over Moses Itauma in London. Despite finding himself behind on the judges’ scorecards, the 34-year-old weathered the early pressure before stopping the previously unbeaten Briton in the ninth round.

The victory marked a significant moment in Hrgovic’s career, and he will now look to build on that success in front of his home supporters.

Sanchez, however, represents a dangerous first assignment for the new champion.

The Cuban heavyweight earned his mandatory title shot after producing a devastating second-round knockout victory over Richard Torrez Jr in May, strengthening his position as one of the division’s leading contenders. Sanchez had previously agreed to step aside to allow Hrgovic and Itauma to contest the vacant IBF title, with the understanding that he would receive an opportunity against the eventual winner.

That opportunity now appears close to becoming a reality.

While the exact date and venue remain unconfirmed, the proposed contest could provide Croatian boxing fans with a major homecoming event.

Hrgovic will aim to establish himself as a world champion, while Sanchez looks to capitalise on his long-awaited opportunity and claim the heavyweight title.
