Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson appear to be edging closer to finally agreeing a deal for one of the most anticipated all-American fights in boxing, with The Ring’s Mike Coppinger reporting that negotiations are now at an advanced stage.
The two former undisputed champions have been linked with a showdown for much of the year, but previous discussions stalled over weight and other terms. Stevenson has consistently pushed for a catchweight, while Haney has been reluctant to make significant concessions from his position as a welterweight champion.
Those issues now appear to be moving closer to a resolution, with Haney recently offering to fight at 145lbs without a rehydration clause. The development has breathed fresh life into a contest that appeared in danger of falling apart once again.
Stevenson, meanwhile, has made it clear that Haney remains his preferred opponent and has been searching for a major fight since beating Teofimo Lopez in January to become a four-division world champion.
Haney has also been inactive since defeating Brian Norman Jr. last November, adding further urgency to getting the blockbuster fight confirmed
If terms can finally be agreed, the matchup would pit two pound-for-pound fighters against one another, with both men unbeaten and plenty at stake.
For Haney and Stevenson, the finish line may finally be in sight.
